Lake Weir Boat Ramps and Restaurants are Open!

Carney Island Hope Park Boat Ramps are open. Boaters should exercise patience as lines may be long, particularly on weekends. Boaters should follow the guidelines to stay 50 feet from other boats and carry no more than 10 passengers.

Restaurants around Lake Weir are open with 25% indoor capacity and outdoor tables spaced at least 6 feet apart. Our local restaurants have struggled during the shut-down; we urge you to support them with your patronage:

Eaton’s Beach Sandbar and Grill on East Lake Weir
Gator Joe’s Beach Bar and Grill on the water in Ocklawaha
Big Bob’s Italian Restaurant and Pizza on CR 25 in Ocklawaha

Malibu Boats Tips and Tricks: Boating with Kids

Malibu team pro surfer and mom Stacia Bank shares these tips for boating with kids.

Toddlers: Getting used to the water.

Toddlers should wear life jackets at all times. Stacia recommends buying two per child so they have a wet one and a dry one. She suggests filling your ballast so that the platform is level with the water and letting the toddler play with toys on the platform. She also suggests bringing a baby jumper or a storage bin of toys that your toddler can sit inside and play in while you relax.

Kids: Turn on the tunes.

Stacia advises to let your kids make the playlists for boating days, even if it means listening to their favorite songs all day. She also says don’t complain when water conditions are bad. Keep everything positive. Don’t get upset if they just want to tube or swim; the goal is to get them having fun on the water. When it’s time to get them behind the boat, start out with something where they are sure to have success, like the EZ Ski, a kneeboard, or Zup Board.

Teens: Setting a good example.

Stacia stresses the importance of teaching your teen's good boating practices by being a good role model. Stay off your phone and stay engaged with the family. While teens are waiting for their turn to ride, let them DJ or have them tend to the ropes so they have something to do. Let your teens see you try new things and fail with a good attitude.

6 Healthy Boat Snack Ideas

When you are out on the water all day, you need to keep your family fueled. Here are some easy and delicious boat-friendly snacks that will satisfy everyone.

1. Wraps. Fill your wraps with hummus and vegetables, peanut butter and fruit, or your favorite sandwich fillings.

2. Trail Mix. Make your own mix of nuts, seeds, whole-grain cereal, and dried fruit.

3. No-bake Protein Cookies. Mix together rolled oats, chopped nuts, peanut or almond butter, maple syrup, and chocolate chips. Form into balls or cookies and store them in a container on ice.

4. Frozen Bananas. Insert a popsicle stick before freezing. Get fancy by rolling the banana in softened nut butter and chocolate sprinkles. Wrap in parchment paper and freeze.

5. Veggie Spring Rolls. Spring rolls and a container of duck or teriyaki sauce are always a crowd-pleaser.

6. Popcorn Balls. Mix melted marshmallows with popcorn and form into balls. You can add chocolate chips, M&M’s, or sprinkles for some fun and color.
